Sabrina Avilés began studying flamenco in her mother’s native Dominican Republic and furthered her training in Spain at the renowned Amor de Dios studios in Madrid and with others in Seville. She was a member of the Spanish Dance Theatre in Boston and Omayra Amaya’s Flamenco Sin Limites.
In 2009, Sabrina founded Flamenco Dance Project, a performance troupe dedicated to promoting and teaching flamenco through concerts and workshops. The troupe performed at the Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out Series in 2011, where they attracted one of the largest audiences in the series' history.
Sabrina's talent has graced some of New England's most prominent venues. She has collaborated with esteemed orchestras like the Worcester Symphony and the Cape Cod Symphony. In 2017, she choreographed Bizet's Carmen for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and has contributed to Tony Williams' Urban Nutcracker since 2001.
With a teaching career that spans over three decades, Sabrina has shared her expertise in flamenco at numerous dance schools, studios, and universities throughout Greater Boston. She currently teaches at the Tony Williams Dance Center in Boston.

A workshop designed to teach students how to improvise Bulerías de Jerez with live musicians (open to all levels)
Part I (via Zoom) – Sunday, April 12 4:30-6pm:
Bulerías is the heart of the fiesta, thriving on spontaneous communication between the dancer and the musicians. Alfonso Cid is going to lead us in understanding the structure of Bulerías de Jerez, breaking down its rhythm, different palmas patterns, phrasing, and key elements.
NB: This session will be recorded and will be available for 5 days after the event.
Part II (in person) – Saturday, May 16, 4-6pm:
Once you’ve learned the musical structure in Part I, Yu-Ling and Sabrina will guide you through foundational elements—llamadas, remates, and marcajes—so you can bring your understanding of dance and music together while working with live musicians: Alfonso Cid (cante) and Anthony Tran (toque). Even if you feel shy, you’re encouraged to participate and support your fellow students playing palmas in the process.
NB: This session will take place at Tony Williams Dance Center, 284 Amory Street in Jamaica Plain.
This workshop is to help you gain the freedom to play with the rhythm and confidently communicate with the singers and guitarists, transforming your dance into a lively, shared conversation. Bonus! You’ll have an opportunity to perform your “pataita” at the student recital on Saturday, June 13!
